I am what they call a military brat. Growing up my father was in the navy, and faithfully every three or four years, he changed ships and we changed towns, moving up and down coasts and across the country until I was a teenager. We lived in Brunswick, Maine, at the tippy top of the country, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Pensacola, Florida, but there was only one place I wished I could go back to: California.

* Military brat

When my husband and I made our own cross country move to Phoenix, Arizona, California was the first thing I thought of. I was not interested in exploring the mountains nearby or in visiting the forest-like northern cities of Arizona. I didn't even care about seeing the Grand Canyon – all I wanted was to go back to the place I had fallen in love with as a child now that it was only a day's drive away. By September 1, only a month into our year long stint in Phoenix, we had packed our bags for our first road trip as a couple and my return to the golden state.

We drove six hours along the Mexican border to reach our first California destination. We had a week off work and were planning two stops, one in the sunny, seaside San Diego and one is glitzy Los Angeles. We started in San Diego, and after a good night's rest in our hotel, we set out exploring (or in my case, rediscovering) the city. We went across the long bridge to Coronado island, where we had breakfast at the famous Hotel Del and walked along the beach, touching our toes in the Pacific ocean. We traveled north of the city to a vineyard where we tasted wines and wandered through boutique shops, and then made our way to La Jolla, a coastal community in San Diego near the bigger universities. There, we spent hours gawking at the sea lions who beach on a pier near downtown and had a quiet dinner in a small local restaurant.

Three days later, we repacked our small suitcases and headed two hours north to Los Angeles. We drove along the pacific coast freeway until we reached Hollywood, stopping to walk along the famous Hollywood Blvd and visit the Chinese theater where we compared our footprints to those of the old Hollywood celebrities. The next day, we visited the Warner Brothers studios, exploring the sets where they filmed ER and the Gilmore Girls, and later got to see the taping of the Tonight Show during Jay Leno's last season. We ate at Pink's, a famous hot dog stand with a two hour long wait, and walked down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

길을 나타내는 단어는 Parkway, Road, Lane, Way, Drive, Trail...

* Gilmore Girls -

And all too soon, it was time to go home.

My visit only reaffirmed my love for California, both its natural beauty and its glamorous Hollywood side. In fact, during my year in Arizona, I went back three more times, each time finding something new I loved about it. One day, I will live there, but for now, it's my favorite place to travel – nothing else compares.
