뉴스가 오래 뉴스이기 힘들지만, 근자에 자주 거론되는 인기 토픽으로 꽤 오래 뉴스인것은 오바마정부의 폭스와의 전쟁이죠.

부시 정부가 MSNBC를 공공연히 멀리했을때는 크게 동요치 않던 사람들이 오바마 정부가 Fox News 를 멀리하겠다는 것에는 말들이 분분합니다.  CNN이 애틀랜타에 있기도 하고, 앤더슨 쿠퍼360등 몇개쇼를 꼭보나, Fox News도 챙겨 보는 사람으로서, 오바마 대통령과 그 정부가 자칫 우스워 보일 수 있는 행보를 내딧었다는것에 관심이 갔습니다.

많은 사람들, 특히 언론계 종사자들은 자기들이 Fox에서 일하지 않는다 하더라도 정부의 언론과의 싸움은 이길수 없는, 또는 헛된 것이라는 점을 말하고 있습니다.

Nobody ever wins against the media. The newspaper, TV station, talk radio and even the humblest tea kettle on the air can, and almost always will, take an attack as the perfect opening to repeat and embellish the original story that gave the offended party stomach ulcers.

Mr. Obama, a.k.a. Mr. Cool, astonishes with his inability to see the blindingly obvious. When Anita Dunn, the White House communications director, accused Fox of lying — without using the word — she was venting the president’s spleen. And when Mr. Obama himself said Fox was biased, he was not his usual cool, dead-sober self.

폭스는 부시정권때는, 심하게 표현하는 사람들 말을 빌자면, 정권의 선전을 해주는 역할을 해왔다고도 여겨졌었고, 지난 여름부터 오바마의 행보에 반하는 내용들로 프로그램이 구성해 왔던 것이 현 정권에는 눈에 가시인것을 넘어서 상대하고 싶지 않은 언론사로 못을 박아놓고 싶었겠죠. 또한, 추후의 행보에 걸림돌이 될거라 여겨졌다는 뜻이기도 하겠네요.

그럼 폭스 뉴스는 편협한 내지는 보수적인 성향의 right-wing 사람들만이 즐겨볼까요? 그렇지는 않다고 합니다. 신뢰성을 가지고 있는 조사업체 PEW에 따르면 폭스는 다양한 비율의 시청자를 가지고 있고, 8년 연속으로 경쟁업체중에서 시청률 선두자리를 지키고 있다고 합니다. 이 오바마정권과의 싸움이후 당연히 시청률이 더 올랐겠지요. 자기들의  broadcast an undercover investigation of ACORN 때문이라고 뉴스쇼 호스트들도 큰 목소리로 더 신이나서 말을 하고요.

According to the PEW Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism :

Only three weeks ago that Fox has a more balanced audience than its competitors in the throat-slashing media business. This is the Pew audience breakdown for Fox: 39 per cent Republicans, 33 per cent Democrats, and 22 per cent Independents.

Compared to CNN’s 18 per cent Republican, 51 per cent Democrats and 23 per cent Independents, Fox News is the fair and balanced network while CNN skirts the rim of a partisan organ.

Like it or hate it, the Fox audience keeps growing smartly, while other networks are losing theirs. I am not so arrogant as to believe the public is too stupid to make judgments year after year into wrong-headed direction. Fox News, as of January 2009, already had 83 consecutive months as leader of the pack and its record remains unbroken to this day.

What does it add up to? Nearly eight years at the top.

오바마 대통령 자신이 또, 정부인사들이 표현을 할때 이렇게 했죠. 

" Fox news was biased." or " Fox news is biased, of course they are."

대통령이 Health care reform 을 위해 일요일에 뉴스프로그램들에 돌기로 하는것에서 Fox를 빼버린거에대해 폭스 뉴스측은 당연히 불만이겠죠.

"Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace was a guest on Bill O'Reilly to complain about President Obama's decision to skip Fox News when he makes the rounds of the Sunday news programs to push health care reform.

무시가 가장 좋은 보복이자 공격이라고 했는데 오바마 정부가 수면위로 불편함을 끌어올린것은 위험한 발상인데, 언론사의 성향을 바꿀수 있거나, 언론을 제재할수 있다고 생각하고 그런 전쟁포고를 한것은 아녔을테고 미리 생각없이 한 발표도 아녔을것이기에 흥미가 더합니다. 물론  Left 와 Right 는 치우져서 사실을  다른시각으로 보도 하기도하고, 서로 물고 뜯으면서 대중에게 뉴스와 재미를 준다는 캠벨 브라운의 말에 공감하지만요.
